We have been implementing Veeam Backup Solutions for about the past 4 + years now and one thing that we have learned is that not every backup target is the same. We are pleased to announce this week that we have signed up as a partner with Exagrid. Exagrid treats Veeam backup targets storage differently from traditional ISCSI / NAS or CIFS repositories. It is actually purpose built for backup and optimized for Veeam.

What makes Exagrid different for Virtual environments is:

Virtual Environments

IT environments are increasingly becoming virtualized for the majority of applications.

Virtualized backup applications have many unique features and functions such as the ability to:

  • boot a VM from the backup storage system when the primary VM environment is offline,
  • perform audits or Sure Backups to prove to an internal or external audit team that VMs can be booted or restored in the case of a failure,
  • create a synthetic full on a regular basis in order to ensure reliable full backup restores, and
  • boot a VM on the backup system to test patch, configuration, and other updates before rolling them out to the production environment.

ExaGrid’s unique approach allows for all virtualized backup features to be fast as ExaGrid maintains a full copy of the most recent full VM backups in their full undeduplicated form, avoiding the need for time-consuming data rehydration for each request. Restores, recoveries, VM boots, and tape copies are as fast as reading from disk.

ExaGrid allows IT departments to use any combination of industry-leading backup applications, utilities, and database dumps to a single ExaGrid system.

ExaGrid grows as your data grows. ExaGrid has nine various sized appliance models and can mix and match up to 25 appliances in a single GRID system. This allows IT departments to buy what they need as they need it, protecting their initial decision and investment.

ExaGrid’s full appliances in a GRID is a scale-out storage approach for backup that brings full server resources (processor, memory, and bandwidth) with all capacity. This approach ensures a fixed backup window as data grows and eliminates expensive forklift upgrades in the future.

ExaGrid can scale to 1PB in a single GRID system. All appliances onsite and offsite at the disaster recovery site are managed under a single user interface.

ExaGrid can cross-protect up to 16 data centers in a hub-and-spoke topology with cross-site replication.

The flexible scalability coupled with nine appliance models of various sizes allows IT organizations both large and small to buy what they need as they need it.

In addition, if deduplication occurs inline, then all of the data on the disk is deduplicated and needs to be put back together, or “rehydrated,” for every request. Local restores, instant VM recoveries, audit copies, tape copies and all other requests take hours to days.

We will be having a series of events that we will be running with Exagrid and Veeam to showcase how great they are together:

Announcing the NEW Integrated ExaGrid-Veeam Accelerated Data Mover

Improve performance for all Veeam backups and restores. The Veeam backup server communicates to the Veeam data mover on ExaGrid appliances with an enhanced protocol, versus simple CIFS. In addition, ExaGrid greatly improves the performance of creating a Synthetic Full Backup, as the entire process can be completed on the ExaGrid Appliances using the most recent un-deduplicated data in the ExaGrid landing zone – freeing up the Veeam backup server and network resources for other tasks. Here is a quote from my good friend at Veeam Doug Hazelman:

“ExaGrid has been a valued partner of Veeam for several years. This latest integration further enables our joint customers to leverage the benefits of Availability for the Modern Data Center™. By enabling Veeam’s data mover to be installeddirectly onto the ExaGrid appliance, customers will appreciate increased performance and less complexity of their availability infrastructures.”
