So, the day has finally arrived and you have successfully completed the first 7 parts of this Blog Series.

Now you actually want to deploy Storage Spaces Direct.

Well this is a good news bad news scenario. Let’s start with the good news:

  • Good News
    • There is really only one PowerShell CMDlet to run. Way to go Microsoft I like Easy.
  • Bad news
    • You are about to check out a feature that is so cool that you are going to want to spend more money on cooler hardware. (There really isn’t any bad news)

Let’s get this party started shall we.

Enable Storage Spaces Direct (S2D)

Microsoft has made it extremely easy to enable Storage Spaces Direct in Windows Server 2016. In the RTM Build if you just run:

Enable-ClusterStorageSpacesDirect -PoolFriendlyName S2DPool -confirm:$False

It will auto-provision the storage that will participate in the S2D Cluster. You can choose to do a manual configuration if you want. However, for the purpose of this blog post we have opted for the automatic configuration.

Enable-ClusterStorageSpacesDirect in action

Note: All of the configuration reports are stored in C:\Windows\Cluster\Reports. The S2D Reports are stored with a pre-fix of Enable-ClusterS2D.

This feature is probably one of the easiest ones I have ever had to demo because quite literally it is one line of PowerShell and the magic just happens.

Stay tuned for Part #9 in this blog series where we will carve out our very first volumes inside of the newly created Storage Pool.

Thanks,
