Anyone who installed MDT 2013 Update 1 experienced a number of issues with the initial release. As of September 16, Microsoft has re-released MDT 2013 Update 1 under build 8298, which addresses most (but not all) of these issues. The new build replaces the existing links from the Download Center, and the old build has been taken down. A full list of fixes and known issues can be found here.

It’s important to note that Build 8290 is no longer supported, so those running it will have to upgrade their MDT installation. Among the bug fixes, Microsoft has finally fixed the problems with the UEFI partitioning process, which means that any Task Sequences should be re-created as well.

Unfortunately, there are still a few bugs in the release. Microsoft has said that there are no updated builds planned for MDT 2013 Update 1, as Update 2 is scheduled to be released later this year.

The upgrade process from Build 8290 to 8298 is very straightforward. Download the new MicrosoftDeploymentToolkit from the Download Center and launch the MSI installation. Next, Next, Finish through the install, and launch Deployment Workbench. From there, if you expand Deployment Shares, you’ll see that your Deployment Share has a yellow Exclamation Mark.

Right-click and choose Update Deployment Share. Next, Next, Finish through the upgrade process, and you’re all good to go to re-create your Task Sequences. I also had to do another update of the Deployment Share to regenerate the Boot Images. DISM crashes when I try to build my boot images, so I removed MDAC from the boot image features…this only seems to happen when SSDs are used.

If you’re still running the pre-release version, there’s no upgrade path from MDT 2013 Update 1 Preview, so it will need to be completely removed before MDT 2013 Update 1 can be installed and the deployment share recreated.
