Hey Checkyourlogs Fans,

In today’s post, we are going to look at installing the Storage Migration Service using only Windows Admin Center. To get started with Windows Admin Center you can have a look at my previous post here: http://www.checkyourlogs.net/?p=53693

The Server we will use for today’s post is called techmentorHV05 and is actually an Azure Virtual Machine that will have Nested Virtualization enabled for the lab. I want to try using the Storage Migration Service to move data from my old Windows Server 2016 Nested Hyper-V Server to this new install of Windows Server 2019 LTSC.

To start, log in to Windows Admin Center and Connect to techmentorHV05.

On the Tools menu select Roles & Features and then scroll down to Storage Migration Service.

Once selected click the + Install button at the top.

On the right have pane you can see the feature to be installed. Click yes.

To review the progress of the installation you can click on the Notification Bell at the top right of Windows Admin Center.

The next step is to check out the new Storage Migration Service (SMS)… But where is it?

It turns out it is available via the extensions. Let’s add the Storage Migration Service Extension to our Windows Admin Center Install.

Click on the Settings ICON at the top right.

Click on Extensions, and select the Storage Migration Service (Preview) and click Install.

On the Install this extension page click Confirm.

Now we can see the Storage Migration Service installed and ready to go using nothing but Windows Admin Center. In the upcoming posts, I will demonstrate how to migrate files from one Server to another.

Thanks for reading and I hope you enjoyed this post,

Dave
